Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (April 29, 2011)

by MIKE MACCOLLUM

A film from an Iranian director working in Europe, a US adaptation of an Italian comic book, and an “Irishman” in Cleveland- that’s what we have in the way of limited release movies opening in Indiana this week. And not only that, one of the above films will be playing at a new theater opening on the site of a former one- the Movie Buff Theatre in Indianapolis (where the Loews/AMC College Park once was). For more on these titles- and some interesting movies that will be hitting the state in the future- read on below. Read more »

A French comedy set in the Seventies and a dark comedy about a would-be superhero start in Indianapolis this week, along with a “suspense thriller” from India- while a Broadway show makes its way to some theater screens in Indiana later in the week. For more on these titles- plus the limited-release films holding over in the state this week and much more- keep reading below. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (April 15, 2011)

Two films that seem designed to provoke political/philosophical discussion and controversy open in limited release in Indiana this week- and there’s news of a now-closed movie theater soon to re-open in Indy, with independent films likely to be on at least some of its screens. For all this and more, read on below…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (April 8, 2011)

Spring has sprung, and there is cause for optimism about the variety of films that can be seen in Indiana theaters. Not only do we get an interesting selection of titles this week, it looks like we’ll be getting a consistent selection of cool-sounding movies in the near future… and an Indianapolis theater will have a series of midnight movies sometime soon, which will include two titles not previously seen on the big screen here in Indy (see “Next Week and Beyond” below). For more info, just click here and keep reading…. Read more »

No jokes for April Fool’s Day here- Indiana gets three new limited release films in theaters this week (along with one title that appears to be slightly used)- with even more on the way for next week. For all of the details, read on below…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 25, 2011)

A long-delayed film finally opens in Indianapolis (a mere five months or so behind schedule), while another movie heads straight to a second-run theater in the state capital while simultaneously opening in Mishawaka- and these are but a few of the many odd aspects of film distribution in the modern era. For more on what’s going on with limited-release films (holdovers, special screenings, festivals and more) and related events in the state of Indiana this week, read on below. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 18, 2011)

Our one new limited release movie in the state this week is actually a movie, rather than a filmed stage presentation. Imagine that…. And a long-anticipated film (well, long anticipated by me, at least) finally makes its way to Indianapolis next week. For all of the limited release movie news I know about this week- and the complete-as-far-as-I-know schedule of limited release films in non-theatrical venues, film festivals, and so on for the week- keep reading below. Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 11, 2011)

It’s another dull, dry, dusty week for limited release films in Indiana theaters this week- we get only one new title, and that’s at the end of the week… and theatrical holdovers are at or near an all-time low point. There are lots of interesting movies in non-theatrical venues throughout the state this week, however, and some relief from the theatrical monotony looms on the horizon- but this is at least the second week in a row of limited choices (and almost nothing new), theatrically speaking. For what you can see, and where, read on below…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 4, 2011)

What a week- no new art movies (at the Keystone Art Cinema, or anywhere else, as far as I can tell), no new Indian movies, only one new limited theatrical release of any kind in the state, and very few limited release movies holding over in Indiana theaters (even if one of those, Cedar Rapids, is expanding somewhat in the greater Indianapolis area). That’s the not so great news- but there is some very good news on the horizon, in the “Next Week and Beyond” section, below. For all of that- and the news on all of the special screenings and film festivals in the state this week- keep reading on below…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (February 25, 2011)

Barney’s Version is the “big” new limited release movie opening in the state this week- but we also get an Indian film (without subtitles, unfortunately), and two animated films- one of them with what sounds (to me) like the screwiest story this side of Harry Stephen Keeler. (And if you aren’t familiar with Mr. K, then do yourself a favor, and Google his name.) For all that and more, keep reading on below…. Read more »
