Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana: September 6, 2013

by MIKE MACCOLLUM

Zanjeer (2013)

This is one of those rare weeks when only one big movie opens in nationwide release. That means limited-release movies will be on more local screens than usual, including such rarely-mentioned-in-this-column venues as the Circle Centre 9 and the Tibbs Drive-In. It also means we get approximately four-and-a-half new movies opening in limited release in and around Indy this week- and yes, that sounds strange, but I’ll try to explain it all below…. The Grandmaster (2013)

A snake, a mongoose, an unexpected baby, and a man who taught young Bruce Lee a thing or two all contribute to a busier-than-usual week on the local limited-release movie scene, with four films opening in and around Indy, one recent release making a comeback, and a variety of movies holding over on local screens. Also, one Indianapolis theater is also hosting a world premiere on Saturday night- and mere hours later, an “insane” screening gets underway at 2:15 AM. And yes, you read that right: the movie starts at 2:15 on Sunday morning. Curious? Read on below…. Read more »

Special 26 (2012)

This week is something of a repeat of the last one, as Indiana once again gets some more newly-arrived Oscar nominees on a few big screens around the state, along with a Bollywood newbie with no Academy Award nominations. The gravitational sway of the little golden man also can be seen in the nomination-heavy movies that make up a number of the limited releases being held over in Indiana theaters this week. And it isn’t over yet, either, as we have a film nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director scheduled to open in the Hoosier state next week. Read on below for all of the details….

A Royal Affair (2012)

It isn’t all about Oscar this time around, but it might as well be. Several Academy Award wannabes make their way to Indiana this week, including both a foreign language feature film and some mini-nominees. February 1 also features the Indiana debut of an Oscar-winning actor’s directorial bow, and a multiple Academy Award nominee returning to the big screen in the state. But in the “One of These Things Is Not Like the Others” department, we also get a Bollywood triple feature, of sorts, with three movies in one- but no known Oscar connection….

Race 2 (2013)

It’s yet another slow week, as the Bollywood import Race 2 is the only limited release film opening theatrically in Indiana this week, apart from the documentary Boogie Stomp!, which only just barely qualifies under this heading thanks to two screenings Monday night at four theaters across the state. Of course, we also get the usual variety of holdovers and repertory screenings, along with several one-time-only theatrical showings of films both new and old. And next week holds the promise of an Indiana theatrical opening for an Academy Award nominee in the category of Best Foreign Language Film, with the Indiana debut of another nominee looming on the horizon. Read on below for the moderately thrilling details…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (November 16, 2012)

Blame the new Twilight movie, blame Thanksgiving, blame the upcoming end of the world*- whatever the reason, just one new movie opens in limited release in Indiana theaters this week, as far as I know. Yes, besides that one movie there’s nuthin’ new this week, theatrically speaking. Pickings are likewise slim in other categories covered by this column- not that many limited release titles hold over in Indiana theaters this week, and there aren’t many non-theatrical screenings and events in the state either, compared to the average week. So see what you can this week, and hope for better in the future- if there is one…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (November 9, 2012)

Six new limited release movies arrive in Indiana theaters this week, although two of them debut on Tuesday, not Friday- and one gets only two screenings, on Monday night. And while four of these movies are exclusive to theaters in Indianapolis- and just two theaters at that- there are plenty of festivals, special screenings and other events, both in the Indy area and throughout the state, in the week ahead…. Holy Motors

After the feast of last week comes the famine. Outside of two Indian films presumably without English subtitles, there is apparently only one movie opening in limited theatrical release in the state this week- and even then, you have to use a very broad and generous definition of “opening in theatrical release” to fit that one movie into that category. And another shoe drops this week as well, since relatively few limited release films from weeks past are hanging around in Indiana theaters this week. At least we have those holdover titles, and some very interesting repertory screenings, to hold us over this week- and it does look like there are some theatrical openings scheduled for next week…. Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (October 26, 2012)

The weekend closest to Halloween- without going over- features even more classic horror movies and horror comedies than you might have expected- with some of them in appearing in locations where you might not expect to see a movie at all. On top of that, the Heartland Film Festival winds down, the Ann Katz Festival of Books and Arts gets underway, and several films open in limited theatrical release. And there is some very good news on the horizon for anyone in Central Indiana who is longing to see more limited release films on a big screen in a local theater. For all that and more, keep reading below…. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (May 6, 2011)

We’re on the cusp of the big summer movie season, but this week brings more than a few limited release films to the state- including an Academy Award winner and an acclaimed 3D documentary from a veteran director. Moreover, there’s news of even more limited release films on the way in the future- see “Next Week and Beyond” below. For all of this and more, keep reading… Read more »
