AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Movies – 10th Anniversary Edition
by RISHI AGRAWAL

(Note: If you are simply here for the complete list of films on AFI’s 100 Years . . . 100 Movies list, you can find that at the end of this article.)
I was completely prepared to write about how we need time to evaluate films. According to the marketing campaign, the main reason the list was re-evaluated was to consider the films made in the past ten years, to see if they could hold up to the greats. I was going to point out how the National Film Registry does not even consider films less than a decade old. Imagine my surprise to find that, of the 23 films on the list that did not appear on the 1997 list, only 4 of them were made in the past ten years. I still think that the greatness of a film can only be judged after a number of years, but I will be fair and note that AFI instead took this opportunity to add forgotten films. After the jump, you will find a list of the films that are new to the list, along with their ranks on the current list. Read more
79th Academy Awards (for 2006): Winners
by RISHI AGRAWAL

Let me first say that I somewhat regret not live blogging the Oscars this year. I wanted to spend the night with my friends watching the broadcast. Next year, I will seriously consider doing a live blog of the ceremony. Anyway, at least I got paid for my efforts. I split the Oscar pool with someone else and now find myself $32.50 richer. Yay for money. In the top eight categories, I predicted 7 out of 8 winners, only missing Best Supporting Actor. Of course, that means my Norbit theory might have been correct (that people didn’t want to vote for Eddie Murphy because of Norbit). Anyway, most of the winners (except the shorts) and some light commentary after the jump. Read more

This week on Commentary Track, I’m going to be writing four articles on the Academy Awards, one each day from Monday through Thursday. I am just going to write about the Top Eight categories (in my opinion): Best Picture, Best Director, the four acting awards and the two writing awards. This will allow me to focus on the categories. I would love to write about all the categories, but at least, in the Top Eight categories, I have seen all the films being discussed. Anyway, today we’ll talk about the two writing awards: Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. Read more

I usually don’t watch the Oscar nominations live. It will soon be all over the web, so I am not sure why people would come here to see them. I mean, you could go elsewhere to see the slick graphics and eye-catching pictures. Still, I figured I would eventually put up the Oscar nominations, so why not do them live? So, anyway, here we go. These nominations are in the order they are announced. Read more

(If you got here from a search engine and are looking for the AFI List, then I have a new article on it on the main page.)
Well, it’s been 10 years since AFI first ranked the 100 Greatest American Films. This June, they will do an entirely new list, with films from the past 10 years being eligible.
Say what you will about the AFI list, but at least it sparks debate and conversation about what are truly the greatest films ever made, which is what it is meant to do. Anyway, go here for more information.
