Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (May 18, 2012)

by HELEN GEIB

Summer has well and truly come to the multiplex to crowd out the limited release fare. However, there’s still plenty to see at arthouse and repertory theaters around the state- north, south, and central.

My Top Pick for the Week

I’ve been wanting to get down to Shelbyville to see a movie at the Strand Theatre for a while now, and Sunday could be the day. They’re showing the classic screwball comedy Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House for the unbeatable low price of free. Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (May 11, 2012)

Lots of options this week and it shows no sign of slacking off the rest of the month. I’m looking forward to this year’s “Bigger Picture Show” of movie-inspired original posters, on tonight (and one night only) at the Big Car Service Center art gallery. What do you want to see?

My Top Pick for the Week

It’s outside my geographic orbit, but readers in South Bend and vicinity should block out an evening (or four) next week for the Michiana Jewish Film Festival at Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (May 4, 2012)

Lots and lots to see this week in Indianapolis. Less to see- relatively speaking- around the rest of the state as the university-based cinemas transition to summer schedules. The full listings after the break. What looks good to you?

My Top Pick for the Week

“Why are academic politics so vicious? Because the stakes are so small.”

My pick for the week is Israeli comedy-drama Footnote, about a father-son rivalry playing out in the rarefied world of Talmudic studies. It’s gotten great reviews and it starts today at the Keystone Art Cinema. Read more »

I have some catching up to do at the arthouse, starting with A Separation and continuing with Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and In Darkness. Good thing I’m planning to take a few days off for post-trial recuperation. What looks good to you this week? Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 30, 2012)

by HELEN GEIB

Closing arguments are Tuesday so unless I’m prostrate with exhaustion for several days after (not impossible…), this will be the last abridged column. Five new films in limited release, including In Darkness and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, are just the start of what’s on tap this week around the state. What looks good to you? Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 23, 2012)

And we’re back, after an unscheduled two week hiatus, with another abbreviated edition of TOTM in IN (yes, I’m still in trial- four weeks down, one to go). The arthouse circuit has been buzzing while I’ve been out of it and there a number of new to this column- some altogether new- films listed below. In fact, there are so many movies playing in limited release around the state this week that they tapped out my available blogging time. Luck and the judge willing full(er) listings will return next week. Read more »

Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (March 2, 2012)

by HELEN GEIB

The second not-as-complete-as-usual edition of TOTM in IN was helped along by the paucity of theatrical holdovers. However, A Separation opens in Indy and there’s an Indian film festival at the DeBartolo, among other interesting offerings on tap this week. Read more »
