Hollywood Releases Preview – July, 2011
by HELEN GEIB
Writing this feature is getting me down. Because I have nothing to say about Monte Carlo or Winnie the Pooh or Crazy, Stupid, Love. and because I don’t want to say anything about Transformers 3 or Friends with Benefits or The Smurfs and because saying anything about the final Harry Potter movie would be entirely superfluous, I’m just going to say a few words about the three multiplex movies I plan on seeing in July. Hollywood Releases Preview – June, 2011

The count stands at three family films, two comic book movies, J.J. Abrams channeling Steven Spielberg, and the obligatory raunchy comedy of the month. The Hollywood Releases Preview “Visual Edition” returns for June. Jump to the end for the full releases list with links to the films’ IMDb pages.
Hollywood Releases Preview – May, 2011
by HELEN GEIB
Only eight multiplex releases and a full fifty percent are wedding-themed. Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed go head to head this weekend, with Bridesmaids and The Hangover Part II to follow later in the month. I don’t have anything in particular to make of that, aside from the further evidence it provides of industry groupthink.
More interesting is Thor, one of May’s two comic book adaptations. The other is Priest, based on a Korean manwha (graphic novel) series; 3D is only one of the reasons against seeing it. No summer month being complete without a few sequels, the fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and Kung Fu Panda 2 round out the lineup.

Hollywood Releases Preview – April, 2011
by HELEN GEIB
Hollywood’s offerings for April bear the now-familiar stamp of unoriginality. It’s the new multiplex rhyme: sequel, remake, adaptation, dramatization, parody. Strictly speaking some of the films are original stories, but even there the stories will look pretty familiar to the frequent moviegoer.
However, that doesn’t mean nothing on the list looks worthwhile. Not all sequels et seq. are born equal.
