The Connery Years: Three Sleazy Low Points

From Russia with Love (1963)

I can spot the guys the belly dancer. After all, we get nearly two hours of Sean Connery while they get a few minutes here and there with one of the least consequential Bond girls. However, the gypsy catfight is just too much sleaze to stomach. Note the male gaze. At least there’s no pretense.

Thunderball (1965)

She says no. He forces a kiss on her. She says no again (pictured). He threatens her with the loss of her job. She says yes and… likes it?! The takeaway: in the Bond universe, force + blackmail = the ultimate aphrodisiac.

You Only Live Twice (1967)

007 in “Oriental face” applied by four underwear-clad sex workers. Need I say more?

I always thought You Only Live Twic was the weakest of the Connery Bonds. I can’t argue with your other picks.

I wholeheartedly agree about YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. As a matter of fact my unflattering review is scheduled to post later in the month.

I have watched ‘From Russia With Love’ twice the last time being in 2004 and I do not remember that gypsy catfight you describe at all.

It’s obnoxious and I have the picture to prove it

I guess I just find it amusing and I suppose it is all just about personal taste and perspective, but to one person it ‘obnoxious’ and to another it is so minor and meaningless that I have no recollection of it all.

That gypsy cat-fight is around the 45-50 minute mark. It is then followed up by a firefight and several fists fights.
