According to both Boxofficemojo and moviefone, Solomon Kane is playing in just 15 theaters in the US- and I have no idea why one of those theaters is in Indianapolis. The film is being released in America by Radius TWC, which is the arm of The Weinstein Company that gives limited theatrical releases to films at the same time that they are available by way of Video on Demand. Actually, I've noticed that several Radius TWC releases- including Bachelorette- had verrrrry limited theatrical releases (one showing a day, for one week only, at one theater in LA) a few weeks ahead of their VOD availability and (alleged) theatrical release date. I'm guessing this is to satisfy a contractual obligation for theatrical release ahead of- as opposed to concurrent with- VOD, but I I've never seen any confirmation of this in print or online.... As far as I know, Solomon Kane didn't get any US theatrical release ahead of this week- but who knows? It may well have had a week's release at one of the many, many American theaters I don't keep track of, for all I know....

Solomon Kane was released several years ago in Europe, but failed to find an American distributor. Robert Howard fans will welcome the violent spirit and dark color palette of the film. They will be less happy with the uneven pacing, several weak supporting characters, and the use of a generic late medieval world for Howard's carefully crafted 17th century England and Africa. You can see why, after almost a century, Kane is largely forgotten while Conan, Howard's greatest creation, is well remembered.

I can't believe that Solomon Kane is only now coming out to theatres. I saw it two years ago. And I remember seeing it because a couple of hours after watching it, a buddy of mine called me up and said "Hey, a few friends came over and we just watched a cool little movie called Solomon Kane", to which I replied "What?! I just watched, too!" It's a pretty good film. :O)
