Movie Review – The Tourist (2010)
by HELEN GEIB
The Tourist is fundamentally misconceived: it wants to be both a con game and a lush romance. The two parts are incompatible, and the whole is terribly dull. Read more
Movie Review – 127 Hours (2010)
by HELEN GEIB
Based on Aron Ralston’s memoir Between a Rock and a Hard Place, 127 Hours recounts the true survival story of the hiker who famously cut off his own arm to escape a Utah canyon where he’d been trapped for five days. Read more
Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (December 10, 2010)
by MIKE MACCOLLUM
In spite of the onslaught of wide releases for the holiday season, some new limited release movies still managed to sneak in to a few theaters in Indiana this week- although I’m guessing that at least one of the below will be in fairly wide release within at least a few weeks, given all of the awards talk. Movie Review – Tangled (2010)
by HELEN GEIB
Disney’s new animated feature Tangled is a solidly entertaining family film inspired by the “Rapunzel” fairy tale. The animation creates characters with great personality and charming storybook visuals, and the storytelling is lively and fun. Read more
Thinking Outside the Multiplex in Indiana (December 3, 2010)
by MIKE MACCOLLUM
For yet another week, new limited-release films from India outnumber such films from other parts of the world when it comes to what will be opening in Indiana theaters this week. So let’s have two (or three, or more) cheers for India- and for all of those who book these movies and show them on their screens. And let’s hear some cheers as well for the Shiloh Crossing 18 in Avon, for showing a documentary that apparently would not get a theatrical release in Indiana otherwise. Read more
Hollywood Releases Preview – December, 2010
by HELEN GEIB
Of the nine films scheduled for wide release in December, only two are not a sequel, a remake, an adaptation- or both an adaptation and a sequel or remake. One of the original scripts is the highly stylized, Asian film-inflected actioner The Warrior’s Way, opening tomorrow. Thinking Outside the Multiplex: National Edition (October 15-29)
by MIKE MACCOLLUM
This installment of the column covers the 40-plus limited-release films that opened in US theaters between October 15 and 29*- or at least that’s the bulk of the column. One title, Nora’s Will, actually came out in the US in April- but (until just a few days ago) I had thought that it was an October release in America. Since I didn’t list the film at the time, I am including it here now.
And speaking of Nora’s Will- of all the movies listed below, it’s the one I most want to see in a theater, given all of the awards and glowing reviews. Kuroneko, Boxing Gym, Bitter Feast, and Aakrosh are next on my “want to see” list- but many of the movies below sound worth a look to me. Read more
