DVD of the Week – The Princess and the Frog (2009)
by HELEN GEIB
My favorite animated film of 2009 comes out on DVD and Blu-ray today, and as expected with a Disney animated film, the release comes with choices. If what you want is the movie, there’s a single disc DVD edition with a few features. Paying the Blu-ray premium for the single disc Blu-ray edition gets you get a bunch more special features. For media technology progressives there’s a three disc edition with the same special features as the single disc Blu-ray, plus both Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film and a digital copy.
The DVD single disc edition comes with an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a music video by Ne-Yo (once again, a Disney DVD includes an original song with music video by someone I’ve never heard of), and something called the “princess portrait game” (maybe it’s interactive?).
The Blu-ray edition adds to these a number of other special features, including some short features that sound like they might be interesting from the titles: Backstage Disney; Bringing Life to Animation; The Return to Hand Drawn Animation; The Princess and the Animator; Conjuring the Villain; and a few more besides. It also presents the option to “Play Movie with ‘Work in Progress’;” I’m not sure what exactly that means, but it sounds like something that could be fascinating if you’re really into animation.
