I watched Ninja Assassin a while back and was astonished to not be put off by the lackluster screenplay but rather the fact that all of the action scenes were shot in pitch darkness so most of the film was virtually unwatchable. The editing was very Hollywood (too many close up shots and rapid edits) and the movie was pitch black!
I might have enjoyed the cheese if I could see it. 0_<

I can see that I might enjoy Ninja Assassin because, taking G.I. Joe as an example it's a terrible movie. It didn't bore me or put me to sleep, so kudos. And therefore, I enjoy it immensly.
And I enjoyed it far more than the first hour of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", because that was all I could bear to watch.

@Miriam: Well, I can't argue with the correction. I admit I have a high tolerance for silliness in action movies and comedies, a fact that makes my movie going life a much happier one than it would be otherwise.

I think, Helen, that you can omit the 'at times' in your comment - this story is an inherently silly concept - without denying the movie's entertainment value. I thought it was fun and the action exciting, though it was more of the rapid editing variety than any sustained martial arts virtuosity. Ninjas strike from the shadows, of course, and there was good use of that conceit.

I 'm glad that I've developed a fairly high tolerance for spurting blood from watching many Hong Kong movies. I've only seen a few of the old Japanese ninja/samurai gore-fest movies, but I think this one gives a nod to those. To paraphrase Doc from Stagecoach, "Give me blood, lots of blood, red blood...".

And another connection that probably is only in my mind, but when I saw the heroine I immediately was reminded of the female lead (Natasha Binder) in John Woo's Hard Target. Casting call for one heroine, must be beautiful and must be able to open her eyes very very wide!

Plenty of blood hits the walls and floors, believe me. I enjoyed the movie. It can be silly at times, but it isn't boring.

It's funny, I hear that almost all of the blood in the film is noticeably made through CGI and that it doesn't even have time to hit the floors or walls, it simply evaporates.
Now, why does no one remember that 300 did EXACTLY that?

So Helen, is it true that after the first 10-15 minutes the movie goes on autopilot, including the dodgy fight sequences?
