Zatoichi was critically praised but seldom heard of otherwise, and it's sad because his films contain a certain charm; realism through some absurdities and meditative states of the perception of life and death. I like Kikujiro and his early films, up to and including Sonatine, too. It seems like Kitano was in vogue for a while and then kind of fell out of sight, at least in the US. 'hana-bi' is one of my absolute favourite movies, i may still do a review for it although not in time for the blogathon, and i like 'kikujiro' quite a lot too. if 'sonatine' or any of his other movies are that kind of quality then that'll just confirm my perception of him as a bizarrely underwatched director considering his fame. man, i can’t believe i still haven’t seen this. ‘hana-bi’ is one of my absolute favourite movies, i may still do a review for it although not in time for the blogathon, and i like ‘kikujiro’ quite a lot too.
