The film is an absolutely ferocious attack on the social and political complicity which supports the Camorra's activities. In a scene which is funny, sad, and appalling we visit an apparently idyllic vineyard/farm. Gathered around the death bed of the elderly owner are his two children and the toxic waste businessman. At first the talk leads us to believe that the son is disturbed that the dumping is of illegal toxic materials but soon it is apparent that he and his sister want more money and are willing to lease more land. The poor old man, a sorry victim perhaps? No, he made the original deal and keeps breaking into the talk. "Euros", he croaks, "euros" and grasps at the businessman's arm.

It's a striking look at the banality of evil, counterpointing the oppressive routines of corruption with the sudden outbreaks of violence spawned by the system. Naples emerges as one of the dreariest of the EU's many dreary cities.

I LOVE this film. It's so utterly absorbing and shockingly violent that I wanted to see it again the moment it was over.
I am also reading the book it's based on and the author had one heck of a crazy experience.
