Announcing New Feature “Thinking Outside the Multiplex”

by HELEN GEIB

I’m pleased to announce the start of ”Thinking Outside the Multiplex,” a new weekly feature by a new contributor to Commentary Track, Mike MacCollum. Thinking Outside the Multiplex will complement the monthly theatrical releases post by covering theatrical screenings of foreign, independent, and other films in limited release, as well as special events, local festivals, and various odd and unusual theater programming. Basically if it’s on a movie screen in Indiana, it’s fair game.

The feature will focus on Indianapolis because that’s where Mike and I live. Mike has been my main resource for some years now for information on under the radar films and local special screenings, and I invited him to post his research here for the benefit of Indy film enthusiasts.  My hope is the feature will also prove useful to anyone with an interest in films made outside Hollywood or the state of film distribution in America.

The first post, to be published tomorrow, covers the full spectrum of outside the multiplex fare. Some are foreign and indie films to be on the watch for as they work their way through the country’s arthouse theaters. Others are one-night, nationwide screenings run by distributor Fathom Events. If nothing else, you may learn of one or two movies to pick up on DVD.

Many, many films were made to be shown on the big screen — and provide an experience that you simply can’t get in front of a video set. Light, color, shadow, and nuance often emerge best, and produce their most lasting memories, in a theatrical setting. I look forward to this feature.
