Totally agree, great film. I do wonder how I’d feel watching this film when I’m at retirement age – which is a long time off at the moment! But Payne is one of the best directors working in Hollywood today. Good Review!

Done. Personally I have trouble remembering who won in the 2007 Academy Awards, let alone any further back, and the proliferation of groups nominating the same people doesn’t make it any easier.

In fact, the “two-time Academy Award winner” is also wrong, it got two Oscar nominations but won two Golden Globes, that must be where my confusion was lying. D’oh.

I personally believe Nicholson’s writing to the kid being an easy plot device was meant to be obvious, and to me, even with how simple it is, it’s one of my favorite parts of the movie. That and his total lack of reality and routine after the death of his wife (urinating on the seat and the like). Again, really nicely done review.

Nicholson didn’t win the Oscar for this, it went to Adrian Brody for The Pianist. However, I really enjoyed this movie from Payne/Taylor (Alexander Payne the director and Jim Taylor the writer) who later went on to do Sideways. They have a keen sense to make films that have more from real life than people expect, especially in this film from an actor of Nicholson’s magnitude. Great ending from a great actor.
