I was happy to have been suckered by that particular plot twist. If I had guessed it, I would have ruined a lovely surprise. The "finding yourself" theme of Penelope's story is nicely echoed in the stories of several of the supporting characters, including McAvoy's, Dinklage's, and in a smaller way Witherspoon's. The movie pleased my inner feminist and my inner romantic.

It is quite delightful and I especially liked the revisionist fairy tale ethos that had the princess rescue herself rather than depend on a prince, however charming. Even us grown-ups need some reminding not to judge by appearances; the misidentification of the McAvoy character was a nice counterpoint to the theme - and I blush to admit I never questioned it.

This sounds fantastic! I hadn't heard of it before now. I've saved it to my Netflix queue; hope it comes out on DVD soon. Christina Ricci really impressed me in Black Snake Moan.
