I have to admit, though, that in my case the interest it added was probably outweighed by the ever-escalating annoyance I felt at his self absorption. I absolutely agree about the cinematography. The movie is beautifully filmed and I also thought it would receive an Oscar nom in that category. I think the emotional force in this film comes from the fact that McCandless is such a disagreeable character. He seems to be an easy-going, likable person, but the truth is that he has trouble bonding and is unnecessarily cruel to the people that he cares about. I find that interesting.
