Nosferatu is one of those films that I respect much more than I like. It's one of the most widely seen silents, and even though I don't particularly enjoy it I've seen it four times (including twice in the theater and once at a festival). I appreciate precisely those aspects you call out - the visual style and Shreck's performance - but I have never felt drawn into the story. Murnau was widely admired in his day and is still rated one of the best silent film directors, and other of his films (City Girl, Sunrise, Faust) are among my favorite silents.
