To follow up on what Helen said, it is important to watch this film before it leaves theaters. I know that sometimes I enjoy strange, offbeat pictures. That is not the case with this film. It is just a good story with good characters. I would feel comfortable recommending this film to almost anyone.

addendum to my first comment - I'm writing this in the second week of release and The Lookout is already on its way out of town. See it now! Support intelligent filmmaking! Seriously, this is a very good movie and one of those unheralded releases that people would really enjoy if they'd just give it a chance.

I enjoyed The Lookout very much. I agree that it is script and performance driven, and the movie excels in both. I particularly liked the use of Chris' "sequencing" as a plot element and a vehicle for character development. As Rishi notes, it also provides an apt metaphor for the carefully constructed script. I have to echo the praise for Gordon-Levitt's performance; he is really exceptional here. While it's true that the visual style is generally uninteresting, the film does establish a strong sense of place that anchors the action. It is always refreshing to see a realistic depiction of American life.
