I recently watched "Zodiac" and thought it was by far a great movie. Of course there are better ones but "Zodiac" is like a cute puppy in dog shelter. You get yourself that puppy and after a few months/years he ain't so exciting and fun as he was months/years ago but you still love it. What I'm trying to say is that "Zodiac" may have gotten a bit dull by the end but it was still interesting to watch and see what happens. I'd give it 4 stars.

I enjoyed Zodiac for mostly the same reasons you give, particularly the fine performances. The screenplay was generally very successful in telling the true crime story interwoven with the character development drama. I would also have liked to have delved more deeply into the main characters' lives, but can see that it would have been difficult to do that and do justice to the complicated true crime story. One of the film's strengths you don't mention is that it's often quite humorous (especially but not exclusively in the scenes set around the SF Chronicle), which made the movie much more enjoyable than I expected given the serious subject matter.
