The forward motion in question is reality, for one. I looked at this movie as a true "slice of life". Certain people cannot or are unwilling to change their addictions, but hold so true to their principles, such as the case with Gosling's character. The girl is still inspired by these said principles that she slowly realizes, at a young age, to connect with someone who she feels, or was taught to, as a great importance and influence for having a better life, though he refuses to do so. Not many movies, or any that I remember, focus on
the true importance of educational/personal influence, especially ones that focuses on a young mind that rarely sees hope from hopeless surroundings that her own teacher and coach continues to wallow in. Gosling's performance is truly noteworthy for tackling such complex issues personally and professionally. This movie shows that there indeed exist a thin line between the two and a jumpstart of responsiblity for those that fall in the opposite.
