I read the book after seeing the movie. I have to say as you would expect..............
the book was better
HOWEVER- the book had some fundamental plot points. It is in reality a story about Kitty and definitely feminist in way. As Kitty finds herself - not love in the book.
So prehaps that is why the movie lacks- it took away an important part of the story- I guess Mr Norton needed and opportunity to show his hiney ( no complaints here).

Good review. That's exactly it -- there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the movie, but it fails to go deep into its characters, particularly Kitty, and at the same time keep the story moving.

There was one point at which I and my friends were sure months had passed in terms of the story, but later we realized it must have only been weeks. I guess you view a couple of dozen stunning vistas and it just seems like months! Plenty of missed opportunities for dialogue that would have revealed character and enlivened the plot.
